Avoid Christmas and Winter Weather Stains on Your Next Living Room Carpet

If you want to make some changes on your living room floor, you might want to think about how hard the Christmas activities and the winter weather can be on your carpet before you start. Christmas trees and parties can leave your carpet looking soiled and stained. Old man winter drags lots of dirt and mud across the floor whenever he blows in those mighty northern blasts. However, carpet also provides a warm floor and can be easier to care for than some of the other alternatives. Here are three practical and inexpensive ways to eliminate many future problems.

Get a carpet that is stain resistant. Carpets have been making claims for years, but in the last couple of years some big improvements have been made in carpet fiber technology that really helps eliminate stains. DuPont has developed a product that Mohawk sells as SmartStrand that was good enough to resist stains from the Rhino and Elephant cages at the zoo, so the junk you track in on a snowy day is no problem. I'm sure others have made some great improvements as well, but I am a firm believer in the Mohawk SmartStrand products. The price of SmartStrand is now less than most of Mohawk's older carpet lines. Mohawk now offers as standard a lifetime soil resistance warranty on all SmartStrand carpets.

Carpet Pad is another important consideration. Always replace the carpet pad when changing your carpet because stains can get down into the pad and soak back up into a new carpet. Carpet manufactures will not usually warrant their products without new pad. If you really want to protect your new carpet from winter's dirt and grime; a moisture barrier pad keeps stains from soaking down into the cushion where they keep coming back even after cleaning. Moisture barrier carpet pads are available from just about any carpet dealer in the country. Mohawk calls their pad the SmartCushion, they will actually add 10 years to the abrasive wear warranty when the SmartCushion is used with the SmartStrand carpet.
